Steps one and Two: Determine How Many BTU Needed For Size of Room
BTU stands for British Thermal Unit. It is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water by 1°F. For air conditioners, BTU rating relates to the amount of heat that can be removed from the air. The more BTU an air conditioner is rated for, the more heat can be removed from the air. It is important to select the right BTU air conditioner for the size of the room to be cooled.
Why is BTU size important?
BTU SIZE TOO LARGE:  An air conditioner that has a higher BTU rating than the room size requires will tend to cycle off too quickly. The unit will not properly remove the moisture from the air.
BTU SIZE TOO SMALL:  An air conditioner that has a lower BTU rating than the room size requires will run continuously. The unit will not adequately cool the room.
The figures to the left are estimates based on average room conditions. Some exceptions are:
Kitchen
... Add 4,000 BTU cooling capacity to the recommended size.
High Ceilings/Unusual Floor Plans
... Increase BTU recommendation by 10%.
Warmer Climates
... May require 10-20% additional BTUs per room over amount listed.
Masonry, uninsulated vs. wood stud
... May require 25-30% additional BTUs.
Steps Three and Four: Make Sure Window Size and Electrical Outlet Match Correct BTU Air Conditioner
